Date tattoo: best ideas and meaning
A date is the most personal motif you can have tattooed – to everyone else it is a row of digits, to you it is one specific day. Births, weddings and memorials are the usual reasons. What matters is how it is written. Which day would you carry?

Date tattoos: meaning and symbolism
A date works like a bookmark in a life. Most often we tattoo the birth of a child, a wedding day, or the day someone close died. But a large share are dates only the wearer knows about: the day they stopped doing something that was destroying them, the day they moved country, or the date of a decision that turned everything around.
A date rarely stands alone. It usually comes with a name, an exact time, a heartbeat line or the coordinates of where it happened. That combination is what turns a few digits into a whole story.
Date formats and their pitfalls
This is the one decision worth taking seriously. In Europe the standard order is day–month–year, so 03.04.2024; in the American format the same digits mean 4 March. If your tattoo will be read by people from both conventions, there are two fixes: write the month as a word, or use Roman numerals, where the mix-up is far less likely.
Roman numerals are the most popular option here and also the trickiest. The notation has to be right – four is IV, not IIII, and 2024 is MMXXIV. Allow for length too: a Roman date is considerably longer than digits, so it needs a flat surface or it has to break across two lines. Decide on the separators as well: dots, dashes or just spaces.
And a rule that counts double with numbers: send us the text written out, not dictated, and read it once more yourself. A wrong date cannot be talked away.
Styles, designs and placement
Fine line black work leads our gallery – either plain digits or a Roman version, which reads as more serious and timeless. Handwriting is common too, as are small accompanying symbols. If dates keep accumulating they can be stacked in a column, so leave yourself room; the minimal version is just the year.
We most often tattoo dates on the forearm, wrist, collarbone, ribs and inner arm. A longer Roman date needs a straight line, which is why forearms, ribs and the back work best. The piece is small, heals quickly and is a frequent first tattoo.
Our artists will prepare several notations and typefaces so you can pick the one that will still suit you in ten years. We work in English, Czech and Russian.
