Leo in tattooing: what each symbol means

The lion's head is the most requested motif in the entire zodiac and also the most demanding – it lives or dies on the mane, because that is what creates movement and depth. This is where the gap between good and average work shows most.

Leo is ruled by the Sun, so a solar disc, rays or a crown belong here. The glyph – a loop with a curve, echoing a lion's tail – is the quietest version and handles just a few centimetres.

Styles that suit Leo

Realism and black and grey are the home territory of the lion's head. Count on it needing space, and usually more than one session.

Geometry offers the opposite: the head broken into triangles and lines, modern and much smaller. Ornamental work combines the lion with the sun and decorative detail into one piece, which works very well on the shoulder or chest.

Where to place it

A lion's head wants the chest, shoulder blade, thigh or a full shoulder – it can be done on the forearm, but you give up detail. The sun and the glyph are small and sit on the wrist, collarbone or behind the ear.
